The Garage
The Story Behind The Garage
The garage was a Dream I have had for a while I have been messing with cars since I was about 12 years old. Growing up we had a 2 car deep garage but it was never able to be used for really anything as it had two broken MG-B's in it. Essentially it could only be used to store tools and all work had to be done outside in the driveway. So everything I did was in the rain, the sleet, the snow and it gets really old. Then I moved to Richmond and got a one and a half car garage which finally at least gave me a dry place to work. I also sometimes had access to a lift and once you work on a lift you never want to go back.
So when I started looking for a house I wanted something with a huge garage something that had more than a single outlet and a light bulb, something that was tall enough for a lift. Ideally a warehouse with a loft above it and a full kitchen. The problem is stuff like that tends not to exist in this area. The closest you can seem to get to a is a commercial building in business district. The problem is most places only rent or charge and insanely high price and then on top of that due to most state/county building codes you are not allowed to live there.
So the direction was then to find a nice house with a section of land on it big enough to build a garage or a house with a big enough garage. After months of searching finally found a nice house that checked all the boxes except the garage. the plan was then to either find another piece of property or build a garage.
The moment that i pulled the trigger and fully committed to building the garage was when I saw something by Chelsea (the porsche). The porsche was on jack stand in my driveway as i had just pulled the engine a week and a half earlier. I walked over and looked in the engine bay and bird flew right out past my face. the bird had already started building a full nest in my engine bay after only a week and a half! I was like "Nope I'm not dealing with this I'm building a garage!"
I'm was tired of working in the cold, the wet, the snow, the heat, the mosquitoes, the leaves covering up everything, and not being able to see because its too dark out. This is why I built the garage, also to have a place for my friends and I hang out and just chill.
The Specs
The Garage is 40ft deep 50ft wide and a 16ft clear ceiling
that comes out to about 3 bays wide and 2 bays deep and each bay is very large
In theory I should be able to park 6 Toyota 4runners in the garage and have plenty of room to work around all of them and have extra room on the back wall for my tool boxes and shop tables
The steel reinforced concrete is 6 inches thick at the bare minimum with added footers and supports through out the whole slab that bring a majority of the load bearing areas to about 3 to 4 ft thick. Its a lot of concrete.
The whole garage is Heated and A/C with a bathroom and laundry sink.
I went over kill on the power that way I would never have to worry i could hook up whatever welder or shop equipment up and be fine
It's a 400 amp service :)
and hot and cold water spigots. For cleaning cars shop and any parts
You ever run Hot water through a pressure washer???
Its pretty amazing!
